Underpainting is the first layer of the painting that will be mostly covered my the subsequent layers. Traditionally this is used to describe the value structure of the painting so that when you then move toward a full range of colors, the values are already discovered and all you need to do is match the color to the value you’ve already decided on. What is an underpainting? It’s typically a monochromatic, first layer of paint and foundation of the painting. It establishes your composition, adds luminosity, and depth to your colors. It’s a transparent, toned layer (or layers) that allows light hitting the painting to reflect through the paint layers making them more vibrant.
